In addition to Mary's ongoing journey, it's also possible that American characters will be at the forefront as the Crawleys open their world to other nations to pursue personal and business relationships. Not to mention that Downton Abbey doesn't shy away from difficult topics, with everything from the women's suffrage movement to birth control to post-traumatic stress following World War I and the horrors of the postwar era being spotlighted.
