This is one of those definitions that seems simple, right? It's one whose meaning is easily understood. But that is until you get out of the dictionary. This is one of the topics I've been delving into lately when writing my new book (I'll tell you about it at the end of the article in a video ).
Definition of entrepreneur
Let's start with “our” dictionary, that is, Wikipedia
« An entrepreneur is a person who identifies an opportunity and, knowing the risks, undertakes the action of organizing the necessary resources to become the creator or founder saudi arabia mobile number owner name of a company or business, with the purpose of taking advantage of said opportunity, obtaining a respective profit. »
Well, to be honest, once I’ve read it, I don’t really like this definition. It seems a bit convoluted, poorly constructed (does it take action to organize the necessary resources?), and with some half-truths: knowing the risks? (ha!), to become a founder? (well, this is true, more than one person is dying to update their Linkedin and put “CEO&Founder” )…
It's okay, Wikipedia, you're often right and you shed light on a lot of topics. But it seems that when it comes to relatively simple topics, you get confused. I'm not the master of definitions, quite the opposite, but you'll agree with me that Wikipedia is a bit weak, right?
Let's go with my definition, or rather what I understand by entrepreneur.
Meaning of entrepreneur
"An entrepreneur is a person who has a business idea, defines the business opportunity, assembles a team, defines the project, implements the business plan and works 24/7 to bring it forward."
This definition represents the vast majority of entrepreneurs in their first steps. Obviously, depending on the level of training and experience, this process becomes more professional and perfect.
We started talking about validation of business models, market research, financing rounds, ENISA, balanced work team, shareholder agreement, business and marketing strategy, etc.
Well, that point between my first definition and the terms I refer to later is where I find a large percentage of the entrepreneurs I work with.
One of my main goals in my mentoring sessions is to take them from point A (I have an idea and I don't know how to implement it) to point B (I have a business model that I know works and I have a clear strategy). Points C and beyond will depend on the type of business, the structure needed, etc. etc.
My work with these ventures continues with the implementation and optimization of the results of the business project.
Characteristics of an entrepreneur
What should it be like? What is the optimal profile of a successful entrepreneur? What are their main characteristics? And if you are starting out, the crucial question is: do I have the necessary profile to be an entrepreneur?
This is one of the questions I try to help you answer in the book (you have a test to find out your entrepreneurial profile and what you need to complement it in case it is not optimal), but let's keep it simple.
Beyond hard work, luck, choosing the right market moment to launch, etc., what characteristics should an entrepreneur have?
In my opinion it should:
Having vision and common sense for both the business idea and knowing how to identify the right moments to reorient the business, being clear about where to put the greatest effort at each moment, assessing the economic risks, etc.
You must have a high capacity for work and dedication to launch the business and persist with the idea (as long as it is validated). Entrepreneurs have a different lifestyle than other professionals (personal and professional life are combined).
You need a high level of awareness , both to work on a project from what you do best and contribute most to the market ( purpose ), and to know your limits and seek personal (health, stress management, etc.) and professional balance.
Having a continuous learning mindset to be able to implement those innovative ideas and make the different business models to which you must pivot become a reality. This way of seeing things enhances your capacity for innovation, the generation of business ideas and minimizes the risks of stagnation.
I could go on and on about this because there are many nuances, but I think the idea is sufficiently captured with these three points.
Types of entrepreneurs
But there is not just one type of entrepreneur. If you search on Google about this topic you will see different classifications based on their objective, character, purpose of the undertaking, digital entrepreneur, social entrepreneur, etc. Indeed, there are many possible classifications and types. But I reduce them to two because I believe that these are the types of entrepreneurs that are not thought about too much:
What is an entrepreneur? Do you have the necessary profile to be one?
