Online metadata and big data: how to get the most out of them

Post by shukla7789 »

In this blog, we will explain what online metadata and big data are, and how they complement each other to offer a more complete view of the data. Online or in-house metadata is constantly ignored in Big Data projects , and this is detrimental to the projects. This happens because it is often assumed that Big Data management already takes it into account. But this is not always the case, and online metadata is crucial both for the overall success of a Big Data project and for the organization of the company's data architecture.

Furthermore, online metadata is often confused with Big Data. It is important to know the difference between the two concepts to determine whether Big Data contains them, whether Big Data is just a large collection of metadata, or whether it is more than that.

What is Big Data and Metadata? How do these two concepts differ and how can they complement and enhance each other for business success?

Nearly two-thirds of digital leaders believe Big Data and nurse database are the top two technologies to deliver competitive advantage.

Points of divergence between Big Data and metadata
When comparing online metadata with Big Data, the difference is evident not only in terms of volume, but also in terms of granularity.

Big Datarefers to data sets or combinations of data sets whose size (volume), complexity (variability) and speed of growth (velocity) make them difficult to analyze and process, requiring the use of advanced technology to discover trends and patterns. It includes both structured and unstructured data.

Online metadata , on the other hand, is the descriptive details of an individual digital asset. Due to its specificity, it can provide granular information about a single file and has a high level of structure. It can be classified according to various criteria: for example, content, variability or function. This provides better context about the data itself.

So, the differences between Big Data and metadata can be summarized as:

Definition: Big data comprises a large volume of complex data that is difficult to process using traditional data processing application software. Metadata is data that describes other data.

Information: Big Data can be informative or not, while metadata is always informative.

Processing: Big Data is not always processed, while metadata is always processed.

Usage: Big Data enables databases to store data in large quantities, at high speed and of various types, while metadata helps to understand the nature and characteristics of the data.
