In "Young journalists, the hour of doubt", sociologist Jean-Marie Charon gives them the floor. Between their primary motivations and the reality on the ground, many doubt the merits of their profession and their role in society. Today, they are evolving in an economic context that their elders have not had to experience: the written press has lost more than a third of its revenues over fifteen years, and new media, which have emerged online, are groping for survival.


In his book Jeunes Journalistes, l'heure du doute, published by Éditions Entremises, sociologist australia telegram Jean-Marie Charon gives a voice to 103 journalists, aged between 22 and 30. This survey highlights disappointed hopes, the difficulties in projecting oneself into a media system focused on hard news , the precariousness suffered, the violence of a vertical hierarchy, and the permanent feeling of being downgraded “ because you are young” . Everyone asks themselves, at their own level : why continue when what we do does not necessarily make sense? What is the point of getting into debt and exhausting ourselves for a profession “ where we earn the minimum wage ”? “ Doubt is the general tone of the investigation” , underlines Jean-Marie Charon.


Interview. “ Doubt is a background to everyone’s experiences ,” you write. How does this doubt manifest itself? There is no initial crisis of vocation. Journalism schools always attract the same number of candidates for the competitive examinations, or even a little more. Doubt arises after entering the profession. While it is widespread, it is expressed to varying degrees. The vast majority of young journalists have difficulty projecting themselves, even more than a year or two ahead.
